In the late 60’s the cattle herd was a mix match of Hereford, Angus and Shorthorn. During that time buyers were looking for “feather neck” calves. That was the direction herds were moving until the Limousin breed made its appearance in Canada in 1969. Known for their carcass quality, our first Limousin bull, purchased in 1970, dramatically increased the amount of pounds weaned in the fall. We were hooked and subsequently started selling purebred bulls. Over time the breed was crossed with British cattle injecting marbling into the already high yielding carcass. The evidence of which can be seen at the Canadian Western Agribition where the Limousin breed had reigned supreme until the competition was discontinued. JYF is proud to have been several times champion and feel fortunate to have swept the competition in 1992 with both the steer and heifer champions. At the same time we also exhibited live cattle in the open shows at Agribition, Saskatoon Fall Fair, and Farm Fair in Edmonton, the Calgary Stampede, and the National Western in Denver.
Over the years we have developed a set of beliefs that guide our day to day operations:
We Believe in ranching for profit. Ranching is not a job, it’s a way of life. Our goal is to make sure that our customers are able to enjoy that way of life and pass it on to their children. Our focus is on productivity, ensuring that every sire selected will add pounds to your calf crop. The only way to guarantee profitability is to make sure you maximize the amount of pounds you sell in the fall. At JYF your profitability is our first priority.
We Believe in the power of genetic selection. The cattle industry is constantly evolving however, docility, efficiency, and productivity are here to stay. If an animal isn’t a leader in all three of those traits, she won’t be at our place. Strict culling practices work, genetics that aren’t as efficient, or are high headed are bred out. If she is not good enough for our place, rest assured that we won’t be sending her offspring to you.
We Believe in the beef industry. For everyone to be successful, everyone has to work together. The Canadian industry is light years ahead of the rest of the world in terms of traceability. This technology is providing the packers with a powerful tool; the ability to find who is raising the high yielding cattle. The packer knows that yield makes them money, and as this technology is embraced, producers that are breeding for beef will be rewarded.
We Believe in the Limousin breed. The Limousin breed is the number one terminal cross. Calving ease and calf vigor at birth separate us from the competition. Producers are able to add pounds at weaning without sacrificing frame scores and uniformity. Through genetic selection you will find cattle at JYF that are docile, fertile and full of performance. Ranchers looking to add value to their calves without implants or drugs are turning to Limousin bulls on their British based cow herd with fantastic results.
We Believe in being good stewards of the land. Land can not be replaced. It is up to us to ensure that it is available for future generations. Rotational grazing, solar water bowls, and a lot of fence allow us to manage our native prairie for productivity and safety for the existing wildlife. We understand that to be good stewards we must co-exist with the species that already inhabit the land, and every effort is made to ensure their success as well.
We Believe in being people of integrity. Integrity is when what you think, say, and do are always the same. We strive not to falter in this regard. There are no secrets in the cattle business. After over 40 years of breeding Limousin this belief has not changed.
We Believe in customers for life. We are humbled by the number of repeat customers who attend our sale every year. Our goal is their success, and their repeat business is the best sign of that success. If something’s not right, we make it right, it’s that simple.
