Shay was born in October, 1989. He lives with his family in the hills southwest of his home town of Rockglen, near the Canada-U.S. border.
He credits his art teacher for inspiring him and helping develop his artistic talents. At the age of 16 he won the art contest for the National High School Rodeo Association where his picture "Last Turn" graced the cover of the 2005 NHSRA Finals program. He was also awarded a scholarship for his efforts. That same year he won the art contest for the grand opening of the Shurniak Art Gallery. In the fall of 2005, they hosted the first showing of his art in the Gallery.
He prefers doing pencil drawings but also does some scratch art. Shay's drawings are mostly of the western, cowboy and rodeo lifestyle that he lives. He enjoys doing custom drawing where he tries to capture the images of photos people send him and portrays them as he sees them.

Shay's other passion is rodeo. He was a member of the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Association for 4 years, qualifying for the Provincial, Canadian and National Finals in the Tie Down Roping and Team Roping events. Shay always sets goals for himself and works hard to achieve them. As a result, in 2007 he was the SHSRA Tie Down Roping Champion. In 2008 he was a member of the Canadian Cowboys Association and the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association, qualifying for the finals in both associations in his rookie year. Winning the Championship for the Tie Down Roping at the Manitoba Rodeo Finals in October, 2008.
